Description

Our National Estimations Unit (NEU) works closely with PlaceMakers trade branches across New Zealand to support the delivery of residential and light commercial construction projects. We’re looking for an experienced, customer-focused Detailer / Estimator to join our high-performing Frame & Truss team based in Lower Hutt, Wellington.

The Role
This is a key technical role suited to someone with strong capability in timber Frame and Truss Detailing and Estimating, who can add value from day one. You’ll work across a variety of residential and light commercial projects, partnering with Account Managers, subcontractors, suppliers, and trade customers to deliver accurate, high-quality designs and estimates.

Your day-to-day work will involve interpreting architectural and structural plans, completing take-offs, and producing detailed estimates and documentation that support our customers and manufacturing commitments. Experience using MiTek Sapphire is highly preferred, though strong experience with MiTek 20/20 will also be considered. A solid understanding of New Zealand construction methods and standards is essential.

This is a permanent, full-time position (40 hours per week, Monday to Friday), based at our PlaceMakers Lower Hutt branch. The remuneration range is $40–$45 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Construction Managers, Builders, Architects, Engineers, and internal stakeholders with frame and truss estimation requirements, scope clarification, and documentation
  • Interpret architectural and structural plans, regulations, and NZ building codes to determine estimating scope
  • Prepare sketches, working drawings, specifications, and mark-ups to support quotes
  • Calculate quantities, pricing, and costs for residential and light commercial projects
  • Produce accurate estimates and support quote turnaround times to meet customer deadlines
  • Collect and record project information, including customer and supplier clarifications
  • Perform routine checks, measurements, and calculations to ensure estimate accuracy
  • Provide value engineering input to optimise design, cost, and manufacturability
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Applicants may meet requirements through a NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2) or at least three years’ relevant industry experience in place of a formal qualification.

Essential:
  • Proven experience in frame and truss detailing or estimating
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings
  • Experience with MiTek Sapphire (preferred) or MiTek 20/20
  • Strong building industry knowledge, including NZS 3604
  • High level of numeracy, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with customers and stakeholders
  • Solid computer skills (Excel knowledge preferred; training provided on internal systems)
