Description

Head of Environment, Health & Safety
Auckland
This is a key leadership role in one of New Zealand’s largest distribution businesses, spanning 130+ sites from Northland to Southland.
At PlaceMakers and Mico, safety isn’t a priority that shifts — it’s a value. We believe all injuries are preventable, and we’re committed to making sure everyone goes home safe, every day.
We’re looking for a leader who can lift safety performance where it counts — out in the business — by embedding ownership, accountability, and care at every level.

What you’ll be doing
You’ll lead Environment, Health & Safety across a complex, national operation — manufacturing, logistics, transport, and a large branch network.
As part of the Divisional Leadership Team, you’ll work alongside the CE and senior leaders to shape how the business runs — with safety at the core.
Your focus will be to:
  • Set and deliver a clear, practical EHS strategy aligned to our Fletcher Building values
  • Ensure critical risks and Life Saving Rules are understood, visible, and consistently applied
  • Lift leadership capability so safety is owned by the business
  • Drive consistent, meaningful improvements in safety and environmental performance
What this role is really about
This role is about changing how safety shows up every day — in line with who we are and how we work.

That means:
  • Leaders who take ownership, lead by example, and do what they say they will do
  • Teams who speak up, look out for each other, and take responsibility
  • Clear expectations, strong follow-through, and no ambiguity around accountability
  • Life Saving Rules that are understood, respected, and never compromised
  • Fewer serious incidents because the right things are done well — every time
What you’ll bring
You’ll have experience leading EHS in a large, multi-site operational business — ideally across manufacturing, logistics or distribution.
More importantly, you’ll bring the ability to:
  • Influence at every level — from CE to frontline
  • Role model Fletcher Building values: Protect, Be Bold, Customer Leading, Better Together
  • Call things as they are and act with integrity
  • Balance risk, compliance and operational reality
  • Build capability in others rather than owning it all yourself
  • Stay practical and focused on what actually makes a difference
You’ll have a strong grounding in critical risk management, systems and regulatory requirements — but you’ll know that real change comes from people and culture.

Why this role matters
This is your opportunity to lead meaningful change at scale.
You’ll have the backing of the CE and leadership team to build a culture where:
  • Safety is a value where we send our people home safely every day
  • Our values show up in day-to-day decisions
  • Everyone understands their role in keeping themselves and others safe
What’s in it for you
  • Competitive salary, medical insurance discount, staff-buying privileges and much more.
  • Genuine development opportunities that come with being part of the wider Fletcher Building Group
  • A genuine leadership role with influence across the business
  • The opportunity to shape how safety is led and lived at scale
  • A business that is committed to getting this right — and backing you to do it
Pre-employment checks including references, medical, drug test and a Criminal background check is required as well as the legal right to work in NZ indefinitely.

We are proud of the incredible diversity of people who make up our business! As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we strive to create an inclusive environment for all our employees across our national network of branches throughout New Zealand.
