Description

At PlaceMakers, we’re proud to support the people who are building New Zealand. From residential homes to light commercial projects, our teams work closely with builders, designers, and manufacturers to deliver smart, buildable solutions — and we’re looking for an experienced Frame & Truss Detailer to join our Christchurch team.

If you’re someone who enjoys the technical side of construction, takes pride in accuracy, and understands what builders need to keep projects moving, this could be the role for you.

About the Role
This is a hands-on detailing role where your technical expertise will make a real difference. You’ll be responsible for detailing timber frame and truss packages across a range of residential and light commercial builds.

Working closely with Account Managers, builders, architects, engineers, and manufacturing teams, you’ll ensure designs are practical, compliant, and deliverable - balancing buildability, cost, and accuracy every step of the way.

This is a permanent full-time role, offering 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based in our PlaceMakers Christchurch plant. This role has a remuneration range between $40 to $45 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Produce accurate frame and truss detailing for residential and light commercial projects
  • Interpret architectural and structural drawings, engineering details, and specifications
  • Use MiTek Sapphire (preferred) or MiTek 20/20 to complete designs and documentation
  • Prepare take-offs, working drawings, sketches, and mark-ups to support quotes and manufacturing
  • Liaise with builders, designers, engineers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to clarify scope and resolve issues early
  • Ensure designs meet NZ Building Code requirements, including NZS 3604
  • Provide value engineering input to improve efficiency, cost, and constructability
  • Maintain accurate records, project notes, and documentation to support smooth job delivery

What You’ll Bring
You might come from a detailing, estimating, or manufacturing background — what matters most is your technical capability and understanding of how buildings go together.

Essential:
  • Proven experience in frame and truss detailing and/or estimating
  • Strong ability to read and interpret architectural and structural plans
  • Experience with MiTek Sapphire (highly preferred) or MiTek 20/20
  • Solid knowledge of New Zealand construction methods and standards
  • High attention to detail and strong numerical skills
  • Confident communicator who can work effectively with builders and project stakeholders
  • Good computer skills (Excel experience helpful; training provided on PlaceMakers systems)
A formal qualification is welcome but not essential — comparable industry experience is equally valued.

What We Offer
  • Competitive hourly rate and staff buying privileges
  • Career development opportunities within the wider Fletcher Building Group
  • Employment Education Fund to support further learning for you or your children
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives, including an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Pre-employment checks apply, including references, medical assessment, drug test, criminal background check, and confirmation of the legal right to work in New Zealand indefinitely.

We are proud of the incredible diversity of people who make up our business! As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we strive to create an inclusive environment for all our employees across our national network of branches throughout New Zealand.
