Site Engineer – Surfacing Team (Wellington)

Higgins Wellington is looking for a motivated and hands on Site Engineer to join our Surfacing Team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their engineering career who wants to build capability across a wide range of surfacing and civil construction projects.

If you enjoy working outdoors, have a passion for pavement construction and surfacing operations, and want to grow within a supportive and experienced team, this role offers a strong pathway for development.

What you’ll be doing
  • Supporting the planning and coordination of daily surfacing activities (chipseal, asphalt, prep works)
  • Assisting with preparing quotes, estimates and basic pricing tasks for surfacing projects
  • Helping organise plant, labour, subcontractors and suppliers for surfacing operations
  • Creating and drafting job work packs for approval, including JSEAs, Method Statements and ITPs
  • Monitoring progress, quality, and site documentation for surfacing works
  • Assisting with tracking project costs and financial information
  • Building strong working relationships with crews, subcontractors and clients
  • Promoting safe work practices and supporting Higgins’ safety, quality and environmental standards

What you’ll bring to the role
  • Some experience in civil construction, roading or engineering support (internships or graduate experience welcome)
  • Understanding of civil construction and ideally some exposure to surfacing processes
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering (NZDCE, BEng Civil or similar)
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from senior engineers and supervisors
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with a wide range of people
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Confidence using MS Office and an interest in developing digital skills
  • A positive attitude, reliability and a commitment to safe work practices
  • Full Class 1 licence
